CRF® Launches Scientific Excellence Top-10 (SET-10)
A New Annual Ranking of Global Academic and Medical Institutions Based on Academic Contribution at TCT® 2023
Background and Overview
Founded by Dr. Martin B. Leon, the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference is the annual scientific symposium of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF), renowned as the world's foremost educational forum specializing in interventional cardiovascular medicine. Since its modest inception in 1988, hosting just 150 attendees, TCT has evolved into a globally acclaimed conference, drawing over 10,000 participants annually from around the world. Every year, TCT serves as the epicenter for major medical research breakthroughs, convening leading researchers and clinicians worldwide to present and discuss the latest evidence-based research, driving the advancement of interventional cardiovascular medicine to new heights.
This journey to celebrate excellence in interventional cardiovascular research aligns with CRF's allegiance to advancing the field. In line with this commitment, CRF proudly announces the CRF Scientific Excellence Top 10 (SET-10), a new annual ranking aiming to recognize the academic contributions of global academic institutions to interventional cardiovascular medicine.
This initiative serves a profound purpose: to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary contributions made by medical and academic institutions worldwide in interventional cardiovascular research.
The SET-10 initiative complements the tireless efforts of physicians and scientists who submit their original research for consideration at the TCT 2023 conference. These submissions, ranging from clinical studies and basic science investigations to preclinical studies, vie for the prestigious opportunity to present findings on the global stage provided by TCT.
Thirty-two esteemed medical and academic institutions have earned the SET-10 distinction, showcasing their commitment to advancing scientific knowledge in interventional cardiovascular medicine. The rankings span six categories, recognizing excellence within and outside the United States, illustrating the far-reaching impact of these institutions on the field.
CRF® SET-10 Rankings include:
- CRF® SET-10: Global Ranking
- CRF® SET-10: United States Ranking
- CRF® SET-10: Outside of the United States Ranking
- CRF® SET-10: Coronary Ranking
- CRF® SET-10: Structural Ranking
- CRF® SET-10: Late-Breaking Clinical Research Ranking
The rankings are determined based on the cumulative scores of submissions received for TCT 2023, offering further recognition to institutions that excel in advancing interventional cardiovascular research.
Methodology
A total of 1,274 abstracts were submitted for presentation, comprising 499 from the United States, 775 from outside the United States (OUS), 369 in the structural category, and 458 in the coronary category (Table 1).
Each of these submissions underwent rigorous evaluation and rating by an average of 23 expert raters who are prominent figures in the field of interventional cardiovascular medicine. These evaluations were conducted using a scale ranging from 1 to 10 for each of the three specific parameters.
There was a total of 172 late-breaking research submissions, with a median of 18 reviewers assigned to each submission. Out of these, 93 submissions were accepted for presentation, with 29 of them being accepted as late-breaking clinical trials or late-breaking clinical science presentations, either independently or in combination with another submission.
The analysis encompassed all institutions that submitted abstracts or late-breaking research, with exceptions made for those submissions that were withdrawn by their authors. Scores were attributed to the institutions associated with both the first and last authors. In cases where the first and last author belonged to the same institution, the score was counted only once for that institution. It is important to note that submissions originating from the Cardiovascular Research Foundation were not included in this analysis.
All rankings were based on the development of a new statistical formula including all the grades from all scientific submissions received at TCT2023. The formula included only scientific submissions with an average score ≥7.0. The formula took into consideration average grades (55% weight) and the number (quantity) of accepted submissions (45% weight). The late-breaking clinical trial rankings include the analysis of all late-breaking clinical trial, late-breaking clinical science, and featured clinical science accepted at the meeting. The formula included average grades (50% weight), number (quantity) of accepted submissions (40% weight), and a 10% bonus (weight) if they were presented as either an late-breaking clinical trial or late-breaking clinical science.
